It’s hard to put into words the crushing disappointment that washes over us as England fans. To come so close, to taste the sweet nectar of victory only to have it snatched away at the final hurdle, is a pain that cuts deep.
We believed. We dared to dream. For so long, this young, vibrant England team had carried us on a wave of euphoria. Their energy, their fearlessness, their togetherness – it was infectious. We were captivated by their journey, every win a step closer to footballing redemption.
But football, as we know, can be a cruel mistress. Spain, with their intricate passing and clinical finishing, proved to be our undoing. Their second goal with a few minutes to the end of the 90 was a sucker punch, a moment that seemed to deflate the life out of us. The fightback was valiant, but it wasn’t enough. We just couldn't break them down.
Southgate and the boys deserve immense credit for what they’ve achieved. They have transformed our national team into a force to be reckoned with. But this final will undoubtedly be a painful scar. Questions will be asked of Southgate's ability to play to the players complete strengths, doubts will creep in.
Yet, the beauty of football lies in its capacity to heal. The journey to this final has forged a bond between players and fans that will endure. We will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down, and support this team with unwavering loyalty. Because, despite the heartbreak, our love for the three lions never wavers.
